CHAPTER

12

SARAH WROTE DOWN EVERYTHING, not wanting to miss a single detail. Her hand scribbled across the page of the large notepad at lightning speed, glancing up ecery so often check who was talking.

She sat beside Lee at the top of a large, oval-shaped glass table. The room was eerily silent except for the four men’s voices—and Lee’s. The entire room was glass; outside was a large, bustling open-plan office, full of people shouting over the top of partitions at each other, waving files above their heads, and rushing around. Inside the glass room, however, things were calm and quiet. This is how the professionals do business, she thought.

The glass door to the office opened, and a tea trolley rolled inside, contaminating the peaceful office with the loud, busy noise from outside. The young tea girl laid out coffee, tea, and water, followed by a tray of croissants. Sarah tried to catch the young girl’s eye to say thank you, but the girl kept her eyes on the task at hand and then left the room, shutting out the noise again. None of the men acknowledged her, not even with a small look of appreciation—nothing. It was as if the beverages had appeared by magic.

Sarah carried on scribbling to catch up with the conversation while the man in the dark blue suit poured the drinks, asking everyone what they wanted. Sarah decided not to write down the individual drink requests and sat waiting patiently for her turn. The croissants looked delicious; she could smell the fresh-baked aroma floating across the room.

Lee had a coffee with no sugar. She contemplated making a note of that for future reference but then decided she was getting ahead of herself and would probably not see him again after today anyway. The man in the dark grey suit opposite had a tea, no milk, and the last man joined the man in a blue suit with a black coffee. Blue Suit then passed the croissants around and sat back down.

Sarah looked at Blue Suit, but he ignored her stare, carrying on with the meeting. She looked at Lee, who also ignored her stare. Sarah felt her blood rush through her veins. Had she gone back in time? Was there not a such a thing as women’s rights in this room? Did they not know that the women’s movement had happened? The muscles on the side of Sarah’s cheeks clenched tight. Should she ask for a drink or just help herself?

“Er… I’ll have a coffee, please,” she blurted out.

Blue Suit looked shocked, as if a voice had come from a stone statue. Sarah did not want to look at Lee in case he was angry at her for interrupting, but what was she supposed to do? She was thirsty, and anyway, Blue Suit had been ignoring her.

“Ah, OK.” Blue Suit stood and fumbled with the teapot as if embarrassed, looking over at Lee for moral support.

Sarah tried not to look, now feeling terrible for embarrassing Blue Suit in front of his business colleges.
